The rally ran all day Sunday October 22, 2006. On Saturday I attended a dinner for members of the Sidecar Industry Council. The Industry council is a who's who of the sidecar industry and is headed by the unquestioned foremost sidecar authority in the US Doug Bingham of Side Strider Sidecars in California. Doug is the founder and organizer of the Griffith Park sidecar rally.
I met a lot of very nice people and dedicated side car enthusiasts from all over the world. Doug also entertained us with some wonderful stories from his days as a sidecar racer. As the newest member of the Industry Council we were made to feel very welcome.
I have been at a LOT of motorcycle shows and rallies and I must confess I have NEVER seen anything like the Griffith Park Rally. A word of advice, if there is ANY way that you can ever attend this rally, please do so. I have never seen so many unusual and beautiful motorcycles and sidecars in one place in my life. I was absolutely flabbergasted by the machines which were on display. There were Vintage Jawa, Steib, Globe and other sidecars as well as many homemade and other unusual units. The vast majority of them drove there under there own power. You will find a picture gallery at www.cyclesidecar.com and we have assembled a slide show for you here.
We were represented by our dealer in the Reno Nevada area, Guy Coover. Guy is known to many of you as a builder of some of the most beautiful Cozy Sidecar rigs around as well as being the consummate host of the West Coast Royal Enfield rally every year. He also sells a lot of used Royal Enfield bikes to customers in California. Among other old friends that we ran into was Carla King who rode a Royal Enfield all over India by herself a few years ago, Tom and Rita from R&T Motorrad in Canada, Steve from the United Sidecar Association (USCA) and the sidecarist magazine and the representatives of Hack’d magazine.
Here are a few pictures of some of the interesting people and machines we saw at the Rally, but check out our photo gallery for more and our Griffith Park Rally Slideshow.
